“We love our Ouch roller, as Mr L is always in the wars playing outside. Yesterday he got a lump on his head, and we weren't sure if it was a bite or a bang, but we applied the Ouch roller - by this morning the lump is gone. Mr L loves his rollers and I love that he can apply them safely himself“

Headache Relief with Essential Oils
Are you tired of reaching for over-the-counter painkillers every time a headache strikes?
Many of us are, and the good news is that there's a natural alternative that can provide effective relief: essential oils.
In this post, we'll explore how peppermint and copaiba essential oils can be your secret weapons against headaches, backed by research and centuries of traditional use.
Peppermint Oil:
Peppermint essential oil is well-known for its refreshing aroma, but it also packs a powerful punch when it comes to headache relief. This oil contains a compound called menthol, which has analgesic and muscle relaxant properties. Here's how peppermint oil can help:
Applying diluted peppermint oil to your temples and gently massaging it in can help alleviate headache pain. The cooling sensation of menthol can ease tension and discomfort.
Peppermint oil's invigorating scent can also help clear your mind, making it easier to focus and reducing the stress that may contribute to headaches.
In the quoted, randomised control trial from Göbel et al peppermint essential oil was as effective as paracetamol against headaches. It has traditionally been used in aromatherapy as an analgesic to relieve pain, decrease headache symptoms and the symptoms and duration of mild migraines, as well as other painful ailments such as relieving toothaches, decreasing mild rheumatic aches and to reduce menstruation pain.
Copaiba Oil:
Copaiba essential oil, derived from the resin of South American Copaifera trees, has been used for centuries for its anti-inflammatory properties. While it may not have the same cooling effect as peppermint oil, it can still provide significant relief from headaches:
Copaiba oil's primary compound, beta-caryophyllene, has been studied for its potent anti-inflammatory effects. Inflammation can be a trigger for headaches, and reducing it can help prevent and relieve them.
Copaiba oil has a warm, woody aroma that can promote relaxation and ease tension, potentially reducing the frequency and severity of headaches.
The anti-inflammatory properties of Copaiba oil are well documented. This study found that "there was a highly significant decrease in the surface affected with acne in the areas treated with the 1.0% copaiba essential oil preparation." - Just one percent! Another highlights the role that beta-caryophyllene has in reducing pain associated with dysmenorrhea. This is definitely an oil worth considering for any headache blend.
How to use:
No oils? Purchase a HEAD Roller from Flinders Essential, containing both these amazing oils, plus Lavender for it's calming and anxiolytic effects.
Got your own?
Dilute: Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil like coconut or jojoba oil to prevent skin irritation.
Inhalation: You can inhale the oils using an aromatherapy inhaler or add a few drops to a diffuser to enjoy their soothing aromas.
Topical Application: Apply diluted peppermint or copaiba oil to your temples, forehead, and neck. Gently massage in a circular motion.
Bath: Add a few drops of these oils to epsom salts in a warm bath for an all-over relaxation experience.

Remember that essential oils are powerful, so a little goes a long way. If you have any underlying health conditions or concerns, and especially if you're pregnant, it's wise to consult with a certified aromatherapist before use.
Say goodbye to those pesky headaches and hello to natural relief with peppermint and copaiba essential oils. Incorporate them into your self-care routine, and you may find that you're reaching for those painkillers less often!
